Last night, SESAC, one of the three major music publishing companies, held their annual award show at the New York Public Library. While the red-carpet was graced with some of our favorite celebrities like Kid Capri, Michelle Williams and Swizz Beatz, the stars of the show were writers/composers like Rico Love, Jacob Luttrell, Nikhil Seetharam, and more! Check out my exclusive interviews and photos from the red carpet below!
The event honored Rico Love, who again won the Songwriter of the Year Award, presented by Michelle Williams. Additionally, Daniel Glass, founder of Glassnote Records, was honored with the Visionary Award. For more information on Daniel Glass and his record label, go HERE.
PJ Morton- an R&B singer and producer who is currently the keyboardist for Maroon 5. Signed with YMCMB, his album his stores today. He also just performed at Stevie Wonder’s birthday party in LA a few days ago.
On his album: “I call my music soulful pop music and it’s just the kind of music you can feel and a lot of people can relate to. It’s kind of a gumbo– it’s a mixture of throwback, vintage music, melodies, instruments.. mixed with beats. I produced the whole album myself, features Busta Rhymes, Stevie Wonder, Adam Levine.. It’s Young Money Cash Money Universal. I think it’s cool because it’s a departure from what they do normally. They are really behind me and are supporting me. Lil Wayne is on the deluxe!”
Swizz Beatz- Reebok sponsored recording artist and producer who basically lives on a plane with his #dadhecanttakenowhere.
On supporting the hat designer 40 Oz Van. You know, I’m for new designers. I’m a designer myself. I support new, up and coming designers, especially 40. He’s from the hood like me. I’d rather wear that than a Margiela hat. We gotta support each other more! He’s super cool.
Michelle Williams- While she is not signed with SESAC, she honored Rico Love with the Songwriter of the Year Award, wearing a bright red-pink suit from BCBG.
On her summer plans. “I’m excited about the summer! You know what? Being born and raised in Chicago, I’m not quite feeling the cold weather. Ya know? It’s still kind of a little chilly here but I’ve been on tour and we were just in LA for two weeks. I’ve been in Dallas and I’m going back to Dallas, where it’s nice and hot! I’m looking forward to warm weather. I’m looking forward to my new music that is coming out, being able to tour, and having a great year artistically!”
Andy Allo- This Cameroonian knockout was one of the guest performers for the night. A protégée of Prince, she has just released her second album Superconductor, which debuted at #1 on Amazon’s Soul and R&B charts in the US, UK and France.
On the sound of her album. “Well, I play guitar. It’s very acoustic-base and has real instruments. It’s a lot of soul, funk… I mean the song [I’m performing] is really groovy. I’ve worked with some of the most amazing people. I’ve worked with Prince. I want to perform on Broadway with Michelle!”
Angela Hunte- Having previously won a Grammy for Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind,” she has recently been working with Snoop Lion on his new album and Miley Cyrus. She was also wearing a BCBG suit.
On working with Miley Cyrus. “I just worked with Miley about a week or two ago with Diplo in LA and that was awesome. She’s amazing! I love her. Like I want to adopt her and make her my little sister. She actually told us all about where she grew up because Diplo, even though he doesn’t want to admit it… he’s a small town Florida boy!”
Rico Love- He won the Songwriter of the Year Award, for the 3rd year in a row, having writing Melanie Fiona’s “4 AM,” Trey Songz’ “Heart Attack,” and Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation” ft. Lil Wayne. One of the best dressed last night, as an activist for great fashion, Rico wore a Phillip Lim jacket and button-up, a customized Ashton Michael custom pants, and Balmain sneakers.
On meeting/working with Ken Rebel. “I think Ken Rebel is a superstar. I just closed my label deal with Interscope and we’ve been building, trying to see if it will be a good fit. But I want him on my roster. He’s really a superstar. He says the word ‘Beautiful’ more than anyone I’ve ever heard.”
