Nike’s #BeTrue Collection Supports Equality

by on June 8, 2013

With so many LGBT pride events occurring throughout the country this month, Nike has taken the opportunity to become yet another powerful figure in support of the LGBT cause.

Building from their “Be True” slogan for pride in one’s university, Nike extends this campaign to honor the LGBT community. Nike‘s goal for the #BeTrue Collection is to help break down the barriers of homophobia in sports. Athletes such as Jason Collins and Brittney Griner have recently come out as gay, and Nike is encouraging others to follow suit. All profits from sales of the #BeTrue Collection will be donated to the LGBT Sports Coalition to help end discrimination in sports.

Structured heavily around the colors of the rainbow, which have been the longtime colors of the LGBT community, Nike makes a statement in support of one prominent demographic- but not neglecting to include the others. The collection appeals to a mass market because of a practical and sleek design.

Featured exclusively in this collection is a Free 5.o Running Shoe. The black and rainbow-accented shoe is the best of both worlds with loud colors and classic Nike Free technology, for a weightless, close-to-barefoot feel. For the casually-oriented, the swoosh also releases a pair of flip flops- Nike Solarsoft #BeTrue- made for ultra-comfort while adding efficient ventilation.

The #BeTrue Collection is available online and at select Nike stores.
